The Piney Woods School was recognized for its historic (and continued) impact on education in the South and across the nation. Founder Laurence C. Jones established The Piney Woods School to educate and uplift all students. Dr. Jones spoke of the “resistless urge” for freedom that animates both the character of our country and the yearning of our youth to lead lives of consequence. “You have come here for freedom, not from the kind of slavery your parents endured, but from a slavery of ignorance of your mind and awkwardness of your body, to educate your head, your heart and your hands,” he told the first graduating class.
